Speaker Carl F. Driscoll, DMD
Program Director, Professor, Diplomate, American Board of Prosthodontics
Course Description: The National Cancer Institute predicts that there will be approximately 48,000 new patients with oral and/or pharyngeal cancer this year. Your patients will be included in this number. Various treatment modalities that dentists can provide will be shown via multiple clinical reports of the devastation resulting from the benign to the malignant cancer therapies. Appropriate discussion will ensue to cater to patients currently in your practice as many of our patients and office personnel are not aware of what is available to them. This clinical presentation (no histological slides) is suitable for general dentists, prosthodontists, periodontists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, laboratory technicians, hygienists and assistants.
Course objectives:
- Learn the various stages that your patients may go through when faced with the diagnosis of cancer.
- Learn methods using common dental supplies that are used to treat the dental cancer patients.
- Learn avenues of treatment and appropriate referrals to those health care providers with the skills to treat the more complex patients.
- Learn to realize the dental team must play an integral role in the treatment of the cancer patient.
